Through working with Gilks in the past NSCG (Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group) were aware that lighting can have a significant impact on wellbeing, work productivity and the health of individuals.

With the on-going demand for computer science and gaming skills in the UK, NSCG (Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group) has pushed forward with a significant investment to support these needs. Their Esports courses and facility will support the next generation of computer gaming developers to meet the industry demand.

Like so many jobs today, computer and gaming developers spend their time looking at a computer screen. NSCG have a committed sustainability policy that includes reducing their carbon footprint. They wanted to continue to meet their sustainability goals, but needed to ensure they provided an environment that was bright and supported the wellbeing of their students.

With that in mind, NSCG discussed their requirements with Gilks to gain their guidance and recommendations to upgrade the study areas for their students. The initial focus was the new gaming rooms at NSCG’s Stafford college. The brief was to create a calm, but creative and productive atmosphere for the students.

To align to NSCG’s sustainability goals and the need to reduce energy costs and improve energy efficiencies, Gilks recommended LED lighting. This not only provides environmental benefits, but LED lighting provides a brighter setting that can be supplied in various colours and dimmed as needed. It offers a more flexible, but natural lighting.

To provide a more innovative and creative space DMX controlled LED strip lights were installed in the ceilings and around the edge of the desks. DMX is the standard digital communication protocol that is used to remotely control intelligent light fixtures. This will allow the hues and pattern of colour pulsating around the room to be altered, with the simple touch of a button.

Using colour variation LED lighting adds additional impact to the environment and influences the mood and behaviour of a person. Selecting a warm yellow or orange creates a relaxed atmosphere, whereas a warm blue is better for productivity and concentration.

The finished space resulted in meeting all the needs of NSCG and provides a stimulating environment for the students, as a creative space, but also provides the right lighting to support the need to work at computer screens for long periods of time.

The success and impact of the LED DMX lighting installation at NSCG’s Stafford campus led to this being duplicated in their Stoke campus.
