Business never tasted so sweet!

Business never tasted so sweet!

One of the many exciting projects Gilks is currently involved with, is the installation of a 158,000ft² manufacturing facility based in Middlewich, for iconic UK confectionary brand Swizzels Matlow.

Perhaps the name Swizzels Matlow isn’t that familiar to you, however, you will recognise the well-loved Parma Violets, Love Hearts and Drumsticks sweets that remind us of our childhood. Swizzels Matlow have been making sweets in the UK since 1928 and are one of the oldest sweet manufacturers in the world.

The new production development is to meet the demands of this well-established confectionary manufacturer and to continue their increase presence in the UK. This facility’s responsibility will be to solely manufacture the tasty ‘Squashies’ sweets as the company aims to increase its growth in the global market.

Gilks are responsible for the electrical design & installation of this new facility. With a commitment to improving the sustainability and reducing energy consumption, Gilks have focused on energy saving lighting. This has included installing energy efficient LED lighting and a state-of-the-art lighting control located within the manufacturing and storage area. The project also included the data communications & fibre optics (Wi-Fi points), Fire Alarm, Access Control & CCTV Systems and Ladder and cable trays systems utilising the Gripple innovative catenary system. This not only reduced overall weight of traditional Uni-strut type systems but provides a reduction of the overall carbon footprint of the scheme.

The manufacturing facility will be in addition to the family-owned Victorian mill in Derbyshire, which will continue to produce Swizzel Matlow’s other well-known brands.

Paul Harvey, Head of Operations at Swizzels Matlow has been impressed with the expertise and support provided by Gilks and said: “My first impression of Gilks was that they represented themselves in a very professional manner, clearly demonstrating a depth of knowledge in their field. Gilks interpreted our requirements extremely well and we quickly developed confidence in their capability and the way they conducted themselves. The implementation so far has been exemplary with a high level of transparency and communication”.

Gilks on-site manager Neil Hinds confirmed “The project is going well, and we are currently ahead of schedule. That’s been helped with the location of the build, for ease of access and as always the commitment from the team, especially with the 7am starts”.

Managing Director Andy Oliver is thrilled to have won this and that Gilks is a key contractor for the project. “It’s great to see a UK manufacturer investing for the future, and a company steeped in so much heritage remaining in the UK”.
