Bringing Together our Group’s Expertise

With a project such as the new Swizzels Matlow manufacturing facility the attention to detail from the outset is vital. Key to any new build is understanding the operational needs and now more than ever, the energy efficiencies to be considered. Having a good understanding of the project requirements ensures the appropriate electrical design layout is achieved and correct cabling and lighting is chosen to suit the environment and operations throughout the building. This is a typical project process that Gilks adopts.

To provide optimum light and meet the energy challenges, the new Swizzels Matlow plant has had energy efficient LED strip lights installed. LED lights convert 95% of their energy to light, which means only 5% is being wasted as heat. The system also includes a cloud-based lighting monitoring and management system which can a achieve up to 40% savings a year.  With LED lighting requiring less power than traditional forms of lighting, there is a positive effect on the environment.

In addition to the energy efficient lighting, the new Swizzels Matlow facility has switched to electric forklift trucks. To assist with this ‘green’ efficiency multiple Wi-Fi communications points have been install by Gilks, across the factory floor. These will be used to power the forklift trucks, which will increase productivity and reduce man hours on site. Powered by electric motors will mean there is no emissions, helping to keep the factory air clean, which is another benefit for a food and confectionary manufacturer.

With the lighting installed the project has moved onto the manufacturing side of the design, with the arrival of the production line equipment. Overhead cable ladder/tray and cabling, along with distribution points around the facility have been designed to suit the production operation.

Having in-house expertise within the group, Gilks called upon their sister company Delta Rock, specialist in industrial electrical and automation engineering to install the control infrastructure for the plant’s production equipment. Care has been taken with the segregation of the power and the control cabling of the equipment, to ensure there is no interference between power and communication cables.

Andy Oliver, Managing Director of Gilks says “Having that industrial electrical engineering and automation expertise within the group has been hugely beneficial at this stage with the project. Our teams have collaborated effectively to ensure the needs of our customer have been met”.

Although the two businesses, Gilks and Delta Rock, work very independently of each other, the expertise across the group provides a huge breath of knowledge and expertise for electrical engineering and automation services within the group. This is a tremendous benefit for specific projects, such as the new facility for Swizzel Matlow.
